Today the FDA announced new labeling laws designed to make it easier for consumers to understand the protection they will receive upon using that particular product. Joanna Vargas Spa reviews our Vegan Lip Therapy!

4 Fabulous Vegan Glosses: What Lips Crave

May 4th 2011

Today people are becoming more mindful of the food and chemicals that they put in their bodies, but most people don’t think about the products they put on their bodies.  We use the word “vegan” when we’re talking about people that don’t eat meat, but did you know that cosmetics can be vegan, too?

If you’re like most people, vegan isn’t usually the first thing you look for when picking out a gloss or lip balm.  But vegan lip products are quickly gaining steam on the beauty products scene.  What constitutes a vegan lip gloss? For one, they don’t contain any animal byproducts such as beeswax, gelatin, dairy products or eggs.  Instead, they’re made purely from plants and other all-natural ingredients.  Also, vegan products eschew petroleum, parabens, paraffin waxes or any kind of fillers.  In short, vegan lip balms and glosses only contain ingredients that are good for your lips, skipping the bad stuff. And the best part? They aren’t tested on animals!

Despite all these upsides, vegan products aren’t the simplest thing to find.  But if you’re willing to hunt, you’ll find a number of top-notch vegan lip entrants on the internet.  Here are a handful of the most outstanding glosses and balms.

1. Oh Wow! Lip Balm is a Vegan lip balm made with cocoa butter and Vitamin E.  The balm itself is tinted, but doesn’t transfer the color to your lips; still, it leaves a healthy shine.  It comes in many pleasant flavors: seventeen, as a matter of fact, including crowd-pleasers like Island Delight, Lemon Sorbet and Georgia Peach. Even though it sounds delicious, this balm is all about the scent, not the taste, so you won’t be constantly licking it off your lips.  It’s also long-lasting, so you won’t need to reapply constantly.  Oh WoW! Lip Balm ($12.50 for a pack of 3).

2. Herban Luxe’s Spearmint Lip Potion infused with Rosebuds is a wonderful vegan gloss.  This blatantly romantic infusion features real rosebuds floating in fragrant spearmint liquid.  You’ll notice a subtle spearmint taste and a delicious minty smell.  This gloss is made with all-natural oils like sweet almond oil, organic jojoba oil, and of course, spearmint. Spearmint Lip Potion Infused with Rosebuds ($6.50)

3. Another great balm worth calling out is Lisa Ann’s Vegan Lip Balm, which contains nurturing ingredients like olive oil, Shea butter, vitamin E and other essential oils.  This balm has a slight scent to it, and goes on smooth and satiny.  Perfect for those lips that need a little extra TLC.  Lisa Ann Lip Balm ($5.00)

4. Looking for a little hue help with your gloss? Take out Just Pure Minerals’ Lip Gloss for a spin: it comes in nine luscious colors.  This vegan gloss draws on simple, natural ingredients colored with mineral pigments.  It’s not heavy or sticky, and it goes on smoothly for a creamy, lush lookJust Pure Minerals’ Lip Gloss ($6.00)

Inspired to treat your lips right? When it comes to the cosmetics you use, you do have a choice — so why not give your body what it deserves?  Choose an all-natural, vegan product that delivers nothing but good things to your sensitive skin. Your lips will want to kiss you!

Did you wash your face last night? 4 reasons why you should have!

Let’s “face” it (excuse the pun), it’s easy to skip washing and removing makeup at night.  Don’t know about you but by the time I am ready to hit the bed I am usually exhausted and the last thing I want to do is wash my face. However, I force myself to do it for several reasons.

1. The skin breathes at night, allowing the skin to regenerate while you are in dream land.

2. Not removing makeup can clog your pores leading to more frequent breakouts (who wants that)?

3.  Keeping mascara on all night can also lead to bacteria buildup and an increased risk of getting infections.

4. It feels so great to have clean, glowing skin and I never regret spending just a few extra minutes making sure I am doing what I can to have younger looking skin.

So, hopefully you are more motivated to make cleansing before bed a routine. All it takes is a little warm water, a cloth, and a gentle cleanser and if you are in a pinch grab a babywipe (although I don’t suggest you use it on a regular basis).

So, what is your routine? Have a quick tip you’d like to share? Please leave your comment here! Thanks.

Oil is the new Face Cream!

You may have seen the recent Wall Street Journal article and if not you can read it here concerning using Facial Oil products instead of Facial creams. It points out that legendary beauty, Cleopatra used not only milk to bathe in but also used olive oil. Olive oil has been and is currently featured in numerous beauty products because of its many benefits (high in antioxidants and vitamin E). It improves the skins elasticity, and promotes a smoother more radiant complexion. The following quote from the article is from Francesca Fusco, assistant clinical professor of dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital in NY, “Before a big night out, take 5 minutes to massage your face with an oil. Its hydrating properties and the circulation boost that a massage provides will temporarily plump up the skin and give it a youthful vitality”.

We use olive oil in all of our products but is the foundation of our Facial Cleanser which also doubles as a facial and body oil. We’ve added other beneficial oils and extracts too.

There are products featured in the article (no, ours did not get a mention) but our bottles are ONLY $15 for 4 0z compared with others that range from $29-$150!

Would love to hear your thoughts!

Guiltless Chocolate..DIY Mask Recipe

Chocolate is being celebrated it seems everywhere this week due to upcoming Valentine’s Day. I don’t know about you but I’ve been craving it even more than usual lately (I only eat dark and really good quality chocolate).  You can enjoy it though on your skin as well and it’s very good for you. I am sharing a recipe that you can make and use as an at home spa treatment. It’s a cocoa based mask. Use it once a week to cleanse and draw out toxins. It’s fun to do!

By the way there are many day spas featuring chocolate manis, pedis, scrubs and all kinds of body treatments. Have you ever been to Hershey, PA? The Hotel Hershey is the quintessential spa for chocolate lovers but locally for us here in Ct is The Spa at Norwich Inn, offering a winter seasonal chocolate treatment menu. (disclaimer..they are one of my customers). Chocolate has anitoxidents which we know we need so enjoy this recipe and I’d love to hear what you think. You going to try it?

Ingredients:

1 TBSP Cocoa Powder (any brand will do..try an organic brand or dark powder if possible)

1 TBSP Honey

1 TBSP Yogurt or water or milk

Mix into a paste and apply to face and neck. Leave on for 10 minutes or so and then rinse off. Feel how smooth your skin feels!
